WHY SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES?

It's easy to hit the big box stores or the chain of repair men with franchises all over the country when you need something done. They're easy to find and familiar.  They have giant budgets for advertising so you've probably seen them on TV or heard them on the radio. There's nothing wrong with the big boys in business if that's the way you want to go, but don't forget about the other option that is available to you; small business.

The little owner operated hardware store down the street or the family run flooring business or local grocer are a great resource to tap into in your neighborhood as the benefits are great for everyone involved. You support the local people that live and work right where you do and this benefits your entire community by keeping them viable and available locally. The small business can offer things that are simply not possible with large chains or corporations. Things like after hours jobs, discounts for regular clients and special orders.

More often than not you're dealing with an owner in a small business rather than an employee and no matter what, that customer service level is going to be higher as they have a direct vested interest in gaining you as a client. There is also a different level of trust when you're dealing with the same small group of people over and over rather than a different face every time you enter a store or business. Having your local shops and services get to know you and letting you get to know them makes for a much better relationship with a company that you deal with. Who knows, it might even take some of the sting out of a costly repair or maintenance as there really is something satisfying about supporting your local community businesses.

So next time you're looking around for an electrician, a window washing company or a florist, consider putting your money a little closer to home.
